Yes, go for Power LEDs as you can actually cool them (use the casing as a heat sink).
The most convenient way is to buy a flashlight from dealextreme and mod it. For example with a Seoul P7 or Cree XP-G. Very bright and Dealextreme has loads of multi-mode drivers to go with these High-Power LEDs.

That flashlight would make an amazing grow lamp, for sure. But the focusing aspect of the beam, needs the lens and reflection. But yeah, awesome light man.
WOW! that’s gigantic!
Why dint you use a reflector around the LEDs, it would have helped you in focusing the light and further increase the brightness.

Yes it is! It’s just not very noticeable with one single 5mm LED, but using dozens of them one next to the other will kill them like flies.
